An anticipation/reaction guide will be used to evaluate and analyze primary and secondary source documents regarding Native American and Mexican perspectives of westward expansion. Students will also analyze documents to learn about the political, cultural, and economic way of life in the southwest region from 1800-mid1800. Mexican-American War theme Jeopardy will help students evaluate race relations. To understand how the issue of slavery intensified after the Mexican-American War, students will create a poster showing cause and effect.
Finally, students will put everything they have learned together and participate in a class debate on the Mexican-American War. Students will travel back in time and act as if they were in the Congressional debates regarding the war with Mexico. By participating in this activity, students will gain an understanding of the diverse motives, and opposing perspectives on westward expansion, and The Mexican-American War.
