Anticipation/Reaction Guide
Directions
Students will read two primary source documents and view a short video depicting life in Alta California before The Mexican-American War. Students will begin the anticipation guide working independently, and work collaboratively for the after reading section.
Step 1: Before reading the documents, students will fill out the “before” section of the anticipation guide. For this step, read the statements, and based on your prior knowledge, determine if you agree or disagree with the statement.
Step 2: Begin reading the documents, and watch the video.
Step 3: Once you are finished reading the documents and viewing the video, fill out the “after” section.
Step 4: Go back, re-evaluate each statement, and determine if their responses remain the same or have changed. Use the reaction box to write down any interesting things you learned, any misconception, and a topic you learned that you would like to explore further.
Step 5: Identify two statements you were wrong about and write down the section, or passage of the documents, or video that led you to the correction.
Step 6: Students will be broken up into small groups, to discuss their answers, the readings, and the video. During this time, students will continue writing down any questions or ideas they discuss in the reaction box. Groups will then share their thought on the documents and something from their reaction box in an end of class discussion.
This assignment will take one whole class period. This assignment will also act as a formative assessment. Teacher will evaluate if students are working towards goals. If they are not, instruction will be adjusted accordingly.
